The funeral for country superstar George Jones, who died Friday at the age of 81, will take place Thursday at the Grand Ole Opry House and will be open to the public.

In a statement released yesterday, George’s publicist Kirt Webster said:

George would have wanted his fans and friends everywhere to be able to come and pay their respects along with his family.

There isn’t a more perfect place for George’s funeral to be held than the Grand Ole Opry.  The Grand Ole Opry was a special place for George who joined in 1956 and performed his last performance on the show was in October of 2010.

Instead of flowers, the family has asked that those who wish make contributions to the Grand Ole Opry Trust Fund or the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.

In a written statement, George’s wife Nancy said:

Thanks to George's friends, fans and loved ones for the outpouring of love at this terrible time. I love you all.
