George Clooney Thinks You Don’t Want to See His Old Face in Movies Anymore

One of Hollywood’s most enduring sex symbols is wondering whether movie-goers want to see his aging face at their local cineplex.

George Clooney, whose Hail, Caesar! is now in theaters, told the BBC in an interview published Tuesday (March 1) that he might soon hang up his acting boots now that he’s getting a little long in the tooth. As far as he’s concerned, there’s no aging gracefully when your face is routinely plastered to the silver screen.

“As you age on screen, you get to that point where you really understand that, you know, you can’t stay in front of the camera your whole life,” he said. “I think nobody really wants to see anybody really age. You know, it’s a very unforgiving thing, the camera is, and so aging becomes something that you know, you try to do less and less on screen. You try to pick the films that work best for you and as you age they become less and less.”

Clooney says he’ll likely soon focus his attention to directing, instead, which he said he finds “infinitely more creative.”

“I’ve had really great success [as a director], and I’ve had some not-so-successful films…but what I’ll say is it’s really fun,” he noted.
