I can still hear my parents remind me that money does not grow on trees.  I guess that's why I try to be aware of this life lesson and call me frugal, it truly can save you money.

The number of people that waste things before throwing out a product is ridiculous. If you're a big recycler like I am, you try to clean out your plastics and glass jars the best you can without wasting a bunch of water, which if you think about it, kind of defeats the purpose to conserve.

Reader's Digest recently had a great article on how not to waste the last drop on many products we don't even think about.  I have tried all three and they really work.

  • Olive oil:  There's more oil left in that bottle than you realize.  Just when you think it's time to toss it, try making a salad right in the bottle of olive oil. Just add some vinegar and dry or fresh herbs like basil and oregano, salt and pepper,  shake and drizzle over your favorite fresh greens.
  • Peanut Butter:  You know how difficult it is to clean the peanut butter jar out.  Try making a tasty overnight oatmeal.  Pour in equal parts of oats and milk, add 1/4 cup of Greek yogurt, half a sliced banana and cinnamon and sugar.  Shake to blend and refrigerate overnight.  In the morning you will have a tasty (and healthy) breakfast.
  • Lotion:  Another impossible thing to clean for the recycle bin.  Place the capped bottle of lotion in a bowl of hot water for a few minutes.  The leftover drops should pour out.
