It's happening and my buddy, Matt Kelly is going be happier than ever to see Gillian again!  Fox has announced that they're bringing back The X-Files with David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson returning as Mulder and Scully. Creator and executive producer Chris Carter is also on board.

Carter says, "I think of it as a 13 year commercial break. The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories."

It's being described as an "event series", with a limited run of six episodes. Which isn't a lot, but it's more than nothing. Production will begin this summer. There's no air date yet.

The show originally ran from 1993 to 2002, and there were two movies. One in 1998 and one in 2008. There's no word yet on Mitch Pilleggi's character Walter Skinner, but he was in both movies so it's safe to assume he'll be back for this too.

Some of the characters you probably will not see include:

  • The Smoking Man, who was supposedly killed in the series finale
  • The Lone Gunmen, who sacrificed themselves to stop a bio terrorist attack
  • Alex Krycek, who was shot between the eyes by Skinner in the 8th season
  • Mulder and Scully's son William, who was given up for adoption in the 9th season
