Flights Resume at BGM Airport After Runway Project

Operations are returning to normal at Greater Binghamton Airport after Delta scrapped scheduled flights during a month-long runway repaving project.

Broome County officials were concerned the $11 million job might not be completed by the end of May because of delays caused by unusually rainy conditions.

Aviation commissioner David Hickling said the project was finished on time despite some work days lost due to rain.

The first Delta flight - operated by SkyWest Airlines - after the repaving was scheduled to arrive from Detroit late Wednesday night. The first departure to Detroit was set for 5:55 a.m. Thursday.

Hickling said workers employed by L&T Construction of Richmondville did a "very impressive job" in getting the project completed on time.

The commissioner said two shifts of 20 to 25 people worked around the clock to repave the 7,300-foot-long main runway.

Hickling said 90 percent of the project cost was covered by federal funding and 5 percent was covered by state money. The remainder of the bill was paid for through the passenger facility charge paid by people who fly out of the airport.
