The owner of a 27-unit apartment building on Binghamton's West Side damaged by a major fire is planning to repair the structure.

The May 9 blaze at 1 Mather Street displaced dozens of people. A twin building just north of the structure was not damaged.

The two buildings are owned by Mather Street Realty of Rockland County.

Jerry Einhorn, a manager for the property owner, told WNBF News the damaged building can be salvaged.

Einhorn said the owner expects to start reconstruction work on the structure after insurance issues have been finalized.

Mayor Richard David said the city has been in touch with the building owner as reconstruction efforts move forward.

Investigators said 20 of the apartments in the building sustained no fire damage. Sections of the roof burned in the early-morning blaze, which originated in a vacant first-floor apartment.

The fire was traced to a fan in a bathroom which had been running for several days.

One person was reported injured as a result of the blaze.
