Explore Nature with Finch Hollow Nature Center in Johnson City
As the weather starts to warm up, you might be looking for things to do outdoors with the kids. Things that are both fun and educational. Have you thought about visiting Finch Hollow Nature Center?
Finch Hollow Nature center is located at 1394 Oakdale Road in Johnson City and is a natural history museum with a mile of scenic, easy-to-walk nature trails winding through field, pond and wooded habitats. In addition to the trails, the museum features display cases and there are a bunch of hands on displays.
Admission to the museum is free, but if you’re looking to take it a little further, there are several activities the whole family can get involved in for just a buck a person. Here’s what’s going on:
Family Nature Fun: Wonderful Worms
This family program about worms will be held at Finch Hollow on Monday April 14th from 1pm-2:30pm. Discussion, stories and live worms will be included, along with a craft activity.
Family Nature Fun: Eagles
This family program about eagles will be held on Tuesday April 15th from 1pm-2:30pm. This program is designed for kids ages 6 and older and will include a presentation about eagles, a game and a craft activity.
Family Nature Fun: Otters
The River otter is the largest member of the weasel family in Broome County. You’ll be able to learn more about otters and make a craft on Wednesday April 16th from 1pm-2:30pm. This program is for people aged 6 and older.
Bird’s Nest Basket-Making Class
On Wednesday April 16th from 6:30pm-7:30pm, you’ll be able to make a birds’ nest-style basket. You’ll need to bring a hot glue gun and hot glue sticks. Other supplies will be provided. This class is for adults and kids 12 and older.
Family Nature Fun: Terrific Turtles
This program will run from 10am-11:30am on Thursday April 17th and you’ll lean about turtles and make a turtle craft.
Morning Discovery Walk
A guided nature discovery walk will be held on Friday April 18th from 10am-11:30am.
Afternoon Discovery Walk
A guided nature discovery walk will be held at Greenwood Park in the town of Nanticoke on Friday April 18th from 2pm-3:30pm.
Senior Brown Bag Lunch Program
A brown bag lunch program for those aged 50 and older will be held on Monday April 21st from 12pm-1:30pm. Participants will bring their own lunch with coffee, tea and cookies provided. Lunch will be followed by a presentation on woodcocks.
Make a Hummingbird Feeder for Ages 3-5
Kids aged 3-5 with an adult are invited to participate in a making a hummingbird feeder on Wednesday April 23rd from 9:30am-10:30am. Participants will learn about hummingbirds through a presentation and then make a small feeder to take home.
