Are you looking for an adventure for your family over the holiday school break? Jump "Into the Depths" at the Museum of the Earth. These daily activities which correspond with the temporary exhibit "Into the Depths: Marine Paintings by Stanley Meltzoff."

Monday, December 26th:

11:30am Public Tour- This will be a special- slightly longer Museum tour (45 minutes long) includes the Into the Depths exhibit and then journeys “Into the Museum” to find animals or ocean climates that relate to its paintings.

1-3pm: A Larger Picture - This activity stretches your imagination and habitat knowledge as well as your artistic skill. Continue one of the paintings from the exhibit beyond its borders to create a habitat or add new animals. Learn about ocean habitats and how the artist created his paintings, and add a “larger picture” to a painting’s environment.

Tuesday, December 27th:

1-3pm: It is All Connected! – We are all connected through energy and food. How does a food chain or web work? Looking at the Marine paintings in the exhibit will get you started thinking about how animals and plants are all connected. As you explore the consequences of over fishing or climate change you can create a food chain/web of your own.

Wednesday, December 28th:

11:30am Public Tour- This will be a special- slightly longer Museum tour (45 minutes long) includes the Into the Depths exhibit and then journeys “Into the Museum” to find animals or ocean climates that relate to its paintings.

1 -3pm: The Better to Eat you with! - Come and explore the different teeth of predators and prey. Compare many examples of ocean and terrestrial animal teeth throughout the ages. Do some teeth have advantages or help the animal better adapt to its environment?

Thursday, December 29th:

1-3pm: The Art of a Reef- Into the Depths paintings are created in oil after the artist swam with the fish, but we want to try our hand more simply. Come paint the fish and coral of our two Aquaria with water color. You will be encouraged to paint from our live animals using the media of water color- Seemed appropriate! All Materials will be provided.

Friday, December 30th:

11:30am Public Tour- This will be a special- slightly longer Museum tour (45 minutes long) includes the Into the Depths exhibit and then journeys “Into the Museum” to find animals or ocean climates that relate to its paintings.

1-3pm: Build a Better Fish- Learn about the adaptations we see in the fish of the Into the Depths paintings. Find out why fish are shaped the way they are. Then with your new knowledge you can build a better fish of your own to keep!
