The Endicott Police Department has a new chief. But most village residents don't know it.

Craig Williams started work as interim police chief on May 24, the day Michael Cox retired after serving the department for 27 years.

Chief Williams actually worked for the Endicott agency for about 30 years and one month before he retired as captain in 2013.

Since his retirement from the village police department, Williams worked for Broome County as a welfare fraud investigator.

Williams now expects to serve as police chief for up to 90 days during a transition period before a permanent chief is appointed.

Williams said he had "been in touch with people here" at the Endicott department since he departed the agency, so he's familiar with most of the officers he's overseeing.

The village department now has 27 sworn officers, including Williams. He said that number is down from 35 when he left about three years ago.

Endicott Mayor John Bertoni is expected to announce the choice of a permanent police chief soon.
