New York State officials say Vestal is among six sites in the state established for storing strategic reserves of 2.5 million gallons of gas and diesel fuel to be used following storms and other emergencies.

The Upstate Strategic fuel Reserve Program is funded with $10 million from the New York Power Authority and the fuel is owned by New York State and is administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).

The reserves are being managed by Buckeye Terminals.

Other storage facilities are in Buffalo, Rochester, Brewerton, Marcy, and  Rensselaer.

State officials say suppliers that may need to tap into the reserves during an emergency can pre-register with NYSERDA for release in their region when emergencies are declared.
