The busiest place on Washington Avenue in Endicott on Saturdays appears to be the county-operated DMV office.

People waiting to conduct transactions often line up on the sidewalk outside the office, which is one of the few in New York state to have Saturday hours.

Broome County Clerk Joseph Mihalko said a lot of people travel significant distances to use the office. In recent weeks, nearly one-quarter of those who used the Endicott office on Saturday came from outside the county.

People who were standing in line waiting to enter the office last Saturday said they were glad the weekend service was offered.

Mihalko said he hopes money will be available in next year's budget to fund a mobile unit that could provide Saturday hours for DMV transactions in the eastern part of the county.

Broome County's Binghamton DMV office is open only on weekdays.

The county now is trying to fill openings for DMV clerk positions. Candidates interested in the job must be available to work on Saturdays. Click here to view the job listing.
