The future is now. This summer we'll get to see a full demonstration of the power of driverless cars, which is both amazing and terrifying.

A 32-acre testing ground for driverless cars called 'M City' is being built on the North Campus of the University of Michigan and will resemble an average city, with a bunch of roads, traffic signals, and even pedestrians.  The only difference will be that there won't be any humans behind the wheel.

According to the guy in the video below, the vehicles (which will be “able to talk to each other") can prevent car crashes, streamline traffic flow, and even re-direct cars to take congestion-free routes.

It's estimated that these improvements could save tens of thousands of lives, and billions of gallons of fuel to reduce carbon emissions.

How soon we'll see them on actual streets remains to be seen.
