Broome County Executive Jason Garnar says an abandoned Endicott Johnson building in the town of Union probably will be torn down.

Garnar hopes to make an announcement about the West Endicott property within the next month or two.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, the county executive said he has placed a high priority on addressing the site which has been neglected for many years.

Garnar said the building on North Page Avenue is "so far gone" that demolition likely is the only option. He said doesn't believe "anybody in Endicott will shed a tear" if that happens.

The county executive said the effort continues to find the money needed to pay to tear down the structure. He indicated that the county is trying to secure some state funding for the job.

Developers in the past discussed various ideas for the building but those plans never progressed. The county ultimately took over the property for back taxes.

With 171,000 square feet of floor space, the West Endicott structure is about two-thirds the size of the old EJ Victory Building in Johnson City. Last week, county officials announced a plan to turn that property into senior housing.
