President of Showtime Says Daniel Craig Is Doing ‘Bond 25’

Spectre James Bond
Sony Pictures

When Eon Productions officially announced Bond 25 was coming to theaters on November 8, 2019, they did not officially announce that Daniel Craig was returning as James Bond. Various reports claimed that Craig was definitely coming back (a “done deal” is how The New York Times put it) but until he says or producers say, nothing is certain. (Nothing Is Certain is also one of my favorite Ian Fleming novels.)

But it sure does sound like a “done deal.” The latest bit of confirmation comes from Showtime President David Nevins at the current (and endless) Television Critics Association press tour. Craig is supposed to star in the upcoming Showtime series Purity, based on the Jonathan Franzen novel. But Craig can’t star in the show as was previously planned, because, as Nevins put it (via /Film):

He’s doing Bond first. I can’t say anything about what I know or don’t know about Bond. That’s not my area.

So he either does or doesn’t know anything about Bond. But he does know Craig is doing Bond before he does Purity, which was supposed to begin shooting sometime this year. Craig is slated to play Andreas Wolf, a “Julian Assange type” hacker activist character. (Wasn’t Andreas Wolf the bad guy in Nothing Is Certain?)

Nevins said that Craig still wants to make Purity. But in order for that to happen he and Showtime will have to wait. Bond comes first. So hey, good news Bond fans and/or Jonathan Franzen haters. And if you are in the center of that particular Venn diagram, this is a helluva day for you.
