A Binghamton company will be using heavy equipment to carefully remove a loaded car carrier from a swamp area off Interstate 81.

The truck was hauling six vehicles when it skidded off the snow-covered highway in the town of Lisle on Tuesday.

Several other cars reportedly were involved in a pile-up in the southbound lanes of I-81 between exits 9 and 8.

The operation to pull the car carrier back onto the highway now is expected to start Thursday morning.

Sonny Manny, owner of U-Save Towing and Recovery, said four or five people will be needed, along with a couple of excavators and other equipment.

Manny said crews will use cable to secure the trailer to keep it upright as it is pulled up the slight embankment. He estimated it may take three or four hours to complete the job.

The work is expected to start around 10 a.m. Thursday. The state Department of Transportation will close a southbound lane of I-81 to help protect those who will be working on the recovery effort.
