2016 will be remembered as the hottest summer on record here in the Southern Tier of New York.  The same can be said for just about every state in the US.  The. Hottest. Summer. Ever.  And the week ahead sounds like another hot one in the Greater Binghamton area.

So here are a few ideas to keep you cool, thanks to the editors of Real Simple magazine:

  • Lose the shoes - Those pulse points on the top of your feet make you hot.  Kick off your shoes and keep your feet outside the bed covers when it's too hot to sleep.  I tried this one and it works!
  • Eat watermelon -  if you're like me, you don't need an excuse to eat watermelon and to be honest, they've been pretty cheap at Binghamton area grocery stores and at the Farmer's Markets.  Watermelon has both water and fiber and is known as a "guy's superfood" because it's rich in Lycopene.
  • Chill your pulse points - my Grandmother swore by this.  Try an ice pack or cool damp cloth on your inner wrists or the front of your neck.  This will circulate your blood and cool your entire body.
  • Swap moisturizers - stop the body cream lotion because it traps body heat.  Try a gel or spray moisturizer with peppermint oil or menthol.
