An expansion project at a city-owned community center in Binghamton is progressing after a delay because of cost overruns.

The work at the facility at 108 Liberty Street on the city's North Side was expected to cost $450,000 when plans were unveiled in 2016.

Mayor Richard David said the initial bids received for the project at the Lee Barta Community Center came in over budget.

Marchuska Brothers Construction eventually was awarded the contract for the job for nearly $500,000.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program Tuesday, the mayor said work on the bigger facility now is expected to be completed around March. The project originally was scheduled to be finished last fall.

David said the expansion structure has been erected and interior work is now being done. He said the size of the community center will be more than doubled.

More than half of the project's cost is being covered by a $300,000 state grant.
