The 62-unit Owego Gardens apartment complex is to be built off Route 434 in the village of Owego.

Julie Brown of Home Leasing of Rochester said "people are really excited" about the project, which will provide housing to people over the age of 55.

Owego Mayor Kevin Millar said he's "happy to see development" at the site. He said the apartment complex is expected to open in the summer of 2017.

Millar said more mixed-use development is planned near the apartments. He said that may include offices, retail and light industrial, are possible in the future.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held at the site Thursday, although construction activity has been underway for a few weeks.
