According to WNBG, a Wind Chill Warning is in effect until 6:00 p.m. tonight. The high today will be six, but wind chills will make it feel more like it’s -15 and tonight, the low will be -8 with the windchill making it feel more like -30. These temperatures simply aren’t safe for a person to be in for any longer than a few minutes and so the Broome County Department of Social Services, at the requirement of the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, has launched a Code Blue Plan. The Code Blue plan was created to ensure that people are off the streets when the temperature drops below 32° with the wind chill.

If you or someone you know doesn’t have a place to go to get out of the brutal cold, there are three emergency shelter facilities open in Broome County. The open shelters include the YWCA at 80 Hawley Street in Binghamton, the YMCA at 61 Susquehanna Street in Binghamton and the Volunteers of America, located at 320 Chenango Street in Binghamton.

There will be no charge for anyone needing to use the Code Blue shelters and local law enforcement may be able to help transport you to any of the shelters if you have no other way of getting to one.

On the subject of transportation, BC Transit will not turn anyone away if they’re unable to pay on Thursday, January 31st. If you need a ride to get out of the cold and can’t afford the fare, Broome County will absorb the cost.
