Are you ready for some interesting weather changes coming our way?  According to  WBNG Meteorologist Nick Merianos, later today and the Monday morning commute could get rather interesting. Late Tuesday is a big question mark right now.

Heavy rain overspreads the Twin Tiers early Sunday with the heaviest falling before noon. Steady rain will taper off to showers during the afternoon. A rumble of thunder can't be ruled out. Most towns will average between 0.5-1" with localized 2" amounts in the Catskills.

Standing water on the roadways will be an issue Sunday night as temperatures plummet. Highs will be near 50 degrees but a potent cold front will bring freezing temperatures during the evening. Temperatures will quickly fall into the 30s by 8 p.m and then upper teens/ low 20s Sunday night. The sharp drop in temperatures will result in a flash freeze of any standing water Sunday evening which will result in treacherous conditions on untreated surfaces.

Winds will be another factor Sunday. We may see gusts upwards of 30-40 mph Sunday and Sunday night, especially across the higher terrain. This may lead to an isolated power outage.

Monday will be significantly colder with highs in the mid 20s.

We are watching a storm system for Tuesday evening and night that may bring a period of light snow to the region. This system will likely bring minor snow accumulation to the area. Behind the storm, a reinforcing shot of Arctic air will drain into the Tiers. Highs on Wednesday will struggle to 20 degrees with overnight lows in the teens and single digits.

Forecast snapshot:
• Soaking rain develops early Sunday morning, tapers to showers by afternoon
• Rainfall averaging between 0.5"-1" with localized 2" amounts in Catskills
• Snow could mix with rain showers by evening
• Temperatures rise to 50 Sunday before a rapidly dropping off toward evening
• Standing water WILL freeze on any untreated surfaces Sunday night
• Temperatures in teens/ low 20s Monday morning
• Light snow possible Tuesday afternoon into early Wednesday-- light accumulations likely
• Arctic air returns Wednesday-- highs in low 20s
