Child Hunger Awareness Week is being observed in Broome County.

The Broome County Child Hunger Taskforce reports 25% of Broome County  children under the age of 18 live in poverty.  Over 24% of children in the county live in households that struggle to put food on the table and of the over 13,000 Broome County children eligible for free or reduced price meals, only 22% received meals last summer.

Broome County Executive Debra Preston says food insecurity can contribute to lifelong consequences as illnesses increase and hunger decreases a child’s ability to learn.
