Motorists passing through the area of the Front Street/ Clinton Street intersection over the past several months have noticed how brightly lit the area is and the rest of the City of Binghamton is about to follow suit.

November 20, work began on the City’s changing over to LED street lighting.

The new fixtures are brighter and put out a whiter light.

The City is replacing 6,700 lights at a cost of over $4 million. The initial cost is being covered through the City’s capital bond fund. Officials say that cost will be made up in less than ten years through cost saving from the more energy-efficient lights.

City Hall has also said it expects the better lighting will also translate into a decrease in criminal activity.

The installation started on the East Side.
