For many of us Labor Day signals back to school, traveling, a sale at a local store or the end of summer. But most people have no idea what Labor Day is all about.  I have a brief history of Labor Day that hopefully won't glaze over your eyes.

According to History.com, Labor Day was created as an alternative to violence.  In the late 1800's, the average American worked 12-hour days, 7 days a week.  It was created as a peaceful way to protest for better working conditions and for 8 hour workdays.

The first Labor Day was in New York City in 1882 and included public speeches, relaxing parades, food and music.  Skip ahead to 2015 and we celebrate Labor Day with shopping, travel, barbecuing and sleeping in.

From all of us at 98.1 The Hawk, have a safe Labor Day holiday!
