The Monmouth Hawks, coached by Binghamton High great King Rice, upset 17th-ranked Notre Dame 70-68 in the first round of the AdvoCare Invitational in Lake Buena Vista, Florida Thanksgiving night.  It is the first win over a nationally-ranked team in Monmouth's basketball history.

Rice is in his fifth year as head coach of the Hawks.  Following his standout high school career in Binghamton, Rice starred as a starting point guard at the University of North Carolina under legendary coach Dean Smith. He was inducted into the inaugural class of the Greater Binghamton Sports Hall of Fame in April of this year.

Monmouth is a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.  The win over the Fighting Irish puts Monmouth's record at 3-1.  Earlier this season Rice led the Hawks to a road victory in overtime at UCLA.  Monmouth advances to the semifinal round to face Dayton Friday night. The Hawks play a rugged non-conference schedule which includes a meeting with Georgetown in December.
