The first time I moved away from home, it was a pretty big and drastic move. I didn't slide around the block or across town. I moved to a whole new state- a state where I didn't know a soul.

I was 21-years-old and I moved from New York to Vermont and the first couple months were brutal. Not because Vermont is some God forsaken place, but because I was 21 and didn't know anyone and was so far out of my comfort zone.

Then one day, I was invited by a group of people I didn't know to play kickball. I grew up playing kickball in the empty lot by my house and was fast to jump on the invite. That day, I made friends who I've stayed friends with for the past 15 years. Playing kickball brought us together in a way that nothing else could have.

If you're looking to meet new people, or just need an excuse to get out of the house, the YMCA of Broome County has an amazing adult sports program. From basketball to volleyball, to pickleball (one of the fastest growing games in the United States) and yes, even kickball (the only adult league in the area), the YMCA has a sport for you if you're between the ages of 18 and 90. More than 1,200 local adults participate in the YMCA's adult sports programs each year. That's a lot of new friends you could be making!

If you decide that you'd like to join the YMCA, stop in before November 12, 2016, and drop my name. When you tell them I sent you, they’ll waive your $50 joiner fee!
