Last summer the craze around the country was to dump a bucket of ice cold water on your head to show your support of ALS, the crippling disease that was first brought to people's attention by the great Lou Gehrig.

According to alsa.org, "Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed."

The Binghamton Walk to Defeat ALS is Saturday at Binghamton's Otsiningo Park.  Registration is at 10am with the walk starting at 11am.  As I write this, the weather sounds like it will be a mix of sun and clouds with temperatures in the low 80's, perfect for the annual walk.
