Binghamton University Teams up with Make-A-Wish Central New York

A lifetime ago, I had the pleasure to be involved in a Make-A-Wish event for a young boy named Daniel who was very sick. I can’t remember Daniel’s last name, what his illness was or what he wished for, but I know the event in which I was involved helped raise enough money for Daniel to see his wish become reality.

A couple years after the Make-A-Wish event for Daniel, the most amazing thing happened. I was out with friends at a bowling alley when a handsome young man walked up to me with a big smile on his face. He stuck out his hand and told me that his name was Daniel and then with his other arm, he pulled me into him for a hug and thanked me for helping make his wish come true when he was just a little guy, fighting for his life.

I was completely floored to see Daniel standing before me and even more shocked that he remembered who I was. Daniel had done it, he’d won the fight against this childhood illness that plagued him.  Daniel was so appreciative of everyone who helped send him on an adventure through Make-A-Wish, that as an adult, he decided to devote virtually much of his free time to the organization so that other sick kids could also receive wonderful wishes.  Daniel explained that when he received his wish, nobody thought he would live much longer and that he was terrified, but his wish helped him forget about his medical problems for a while.

I think of Daniel all the time. There’s literally not a day goes by that I don’t wonder what happened to this remarkable human. It’s been more than a decade since I last saw Daniel and I wonder what ever happened to him. Did he kick his illness for good? Is he married and does he have kids? Is he still involved in Make-A-Wish?

The Make-A-Wish foundation changes little lives all over the country, including right here in Central New York. Lives like that of Brody Hines, a 10-year-old from Newark Valley who is fighting medullablastoma and recently saw his wish come true with a Percy Jackson-themed trip through Europe. And then there’s

and they’re able to do it thanks to generous donations from supporters. Supporters such as Binghamton University’s Wishmakers on Campus Club, Kappa Sigma, Phi Mu and Alpha Phi Omega.

In 2016, Wishmakers on Campus set a fundraising goal of $8,000 and surpassed that goal by $2,127. For 2017, they’ve increased their goal to raise $10,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

On Sunday, April 30th, Binghamton University and Wishmakers on Campus will host a Walk/Run for Wishes from 12pm-3pm, and they invite our community to join them.  This walk/run is handicap accessible and will kick off near parking lot S1.

The price to participate is $15 per person, and if you register by April 15th, you’ll receive a free t-shirt. Learn more, register in advance, or form a fundraising team here.
