The initial phase of the Riverside Drive reconstruction project on Binghamton's West Side should be finished soon.

Mayor Richard David says water and sewer lines were in worse shape than expected. That's caused a delay in completing the first phase of the project because more work was needed.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, David said crews discovered more problems than anticipated as the job continued.

The mayor said there were "a few change orders" for the project, which will increase the total cost of the work. But he indicated the additional expense should be under ten percent of the originally announced price tag of $2.4 million.

Three blocks of Riverside Drive west of Front Street remain closed to through traffic because of the reconstruction project.

David said the goal is to complete work on the paving and sidewalks on that section within the next week.

The second phase of the Riverside Drive reconstruction project - from Beethoven Street to the Johnson City line - is expected to start in the spring.
