Motorists using the eastern-most section of Riverside Drive in Binghamton can expect an unusually pleasant ride.

Nearly a year after a major reconstruction project began, crews June 19 were completing paving operations.

The initial phase of the job included replacement of water and sewer lines, as well as the installation of new curbs.

Mayor Richard David has said the first phase of the project took longer than anticipated because the water and sewer lines were in worse condition than believed.

Crews now will turn their attention to the western portion of Riverside Drive from Beethoven Street to the Johnson City line.

The work is being done by G. DeVincentis and Son Construction of Binghamton.

City officials have said the total cost of the Riverside Drive improvements will be about $5.4 million.
