Walk into Muffer's Soulful Kitchen's unassuming, antique Glenwood Avenue storefront a customer and walk out a member of the family, a well-fed member of the family!

the nickname the owners had for their grandmother, is one of Spring 2016 Binghamton Restaurant Week's newest restaurants, just opening in October of 2015.

The dinner menu includes an appetizer,

entrée, two sides and dessert.

I opted for the fried mixed vegetables with a spicy aioli dipping sauce, the fried catfish dinner with candied yams and macaroni and cheese and the sweet potato pie.

My dining partner, world-renown radio legend and mobile DJ, Don Morgan went for the fried chicken and tried collard greens for the first time.

The mixed vegetable appetizer included ochre, cauliflower, string beans and mushrooms, very lightly battered and fried.

The 'Jaws'-sized portion of catfish was perfectly crisp and, unlike a lot of catfish you find at restaurants, was not stringy and dry, but tender and juicy on the inside.  The candied yams could double for dessert with the nut and caramel topping and the huge portion of macaroni and cheese was really a nice surprise.

I teased Dion behind the counter that I would be keeping an eye on him over the mac and cheese and came back up to praise him (and his evil twin.. inside joke) for using several kinds of cheese instead of just "throwing some cheddar at some noodles and calling it 'macaroni and cheese'."

Don Morgan's fried chicken didn't have to hide behind a layer of bread crumb crust. It had delightfully crispy skin and juicy, tender meat on the inside.

He said he really liked the greens that had nice pieces of salty, smoky ham mixed in

The slice of sweet potato pie wasn't overwhelmingly sweet and was a perfect top-off to a huge meal.  You could also choose, as many diners did, the chocolate cake.

Muffer's Kitchen is steadily growing in popularity among take-out and dine-in customers.

They also deliver and do catering.

We seriously walked out of the place feeling like we had become part of a new, exciting family just up the road on Glenwood Avenue and plan to make a point to drop in to see our new ‘cousins’ for dinner again soon.
