Scott Reigle, a senior transportation planner with the agency, said more people of all ages appear to be riding bicycles for recreation and to get where they need to go.

Reigle said area road and intersection improvement projects in the region include features to make it easier for motorists and cyclists to coexist.

One recent example of the effort to help those who ride bikes is at the intersection of Front and Clinton streets in Binghamton.

The intersection project included the installation of special sensors to permit bicycles and motorcycles to prompt the traffic signals to change.

Those embedded loop devices are being utilized more frequently when designers prepare plans for major street improvement projects.
