City detectives are trying to find a man who pulled a handgun on people walking in downtown Binghamton twice in a one-hour period.

The first incident happened around 11:10 p.m. on Easter Sunday when a pedestrian was approached on Chenango Street near Doubleday Street.

A man asked if he could use the person's phone. After a brief conversation, the man pulled a gun from his pocket and demanded the person's phone and cash.

A bit over an hour later, a man had a similar encounter with a pedestrian a few blocks away at Pine and Chapman streets. In that case, someone on the street intervened and thwarted an attempted robbery.

In both incidents, the suspect ran away and no shots were fired.

The suspect is described as a black man; about 20 years old; slender build; about five-feet, nine inches tall. He was wearing a black hoodie, black shirt, dark pants and dark footwear. He had thin facial hair and possibly a moustache.

Although the description of the man involved in these incidents is similar to that of the suspect who had been sought in Sunday's shooting on Susquehanna Street, investigators have concluded they are looking for a different person.

People with information about the robbery or attempted robbery may contact Binghamton police detectives at 607.772.7080.
