Our hearts are with the Binghamton Police Department as they've lost one of their own. 28 year-old Katie Brown, a Binghamton police officer and 35-year-old Christopher Stoeckel, a former Binghamton police officer, both of Binghamton, lost their lives Sunday night in a motorcycle accident.

The accident happened on Route 434 near Pennsylvania Avenue in the city where police say they believe Stoeckel was operating the motorcycle and Brown was a passenger. Control was lost and the motorcycle hit a guardrail.  Police say they believe speed was a factor. Toxicology results are pending and the accident is still under investigation.

Brown was a three year veteran of the Binghamton police department and Stoeckel served on the force from 2008 to 2012. Before that, Stoeckel was a U.S. Marine from 1998 to 2002.

“Although Officer Brown was only with us for a few years, she like all other law enforcement officers was dedicated to serving and protecting her community. She will be missed by her family, friends and co-workers," Binghamton police Chief Joseph Zikuski said.
