A school bus carrying Binghamton City School District students struck a pedestrian on Main Street on the West Side.

The pedestrian was reported to have been critically injured in the incident, which happened in front of 296 Main Street around 7:20 a.m. Tuesday.

The person who was hit by the First Student school bus was taken to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City with traumatic head injuries.

Three elementary school students were on the bus at the time of the incident. They and the driver were not hurt.

First Student spokesman Jay Brock said the incident was "under active investigation right now." He said the driver has been "removed from service" pending the outcome of the investigation.

Binghamton police closed Main Street between Matthews Street and Crestmont Road for more than three hours.

City detectives were assisted by the Broome County Sheriff's Office accident reconstruction team.
