Days after the Johnson City parking deck collapse, crews are moving forward with efforts to keep Binghamton's Collier Street garage in service.

The work is continuing five weeks after Mayor Richard David announced the top two levels of the parking ramp had to be closed because deterioration was worse than previously believed.

Crumbling concrete is an ongoing problem on the lower floors of the garage. A hole has opened up on the second level of the structure directly across from City Hall. The area near the opening is closed but the floor remains open for parking.

On Friday, hours after the collapse at UHS Wilson Medical Center, David told WNBF News he would not hesitate to order the entire Collier Street garage closed to protect public safety, if that became necessary.

The mayor said engineers have concluded the Collier Street facility is approaching the end of its useful life.

The city is planning to spend about $2 million this year on repairs at the three downtown parking garages.
