Daniel Thomas is planning to retire as the city of Binghamton fire chief.

Mayor Richard David on Tuesday announced the 62-year-old Thomas intends to end his four-decade career with the city fire department as of April 9.

Thomas has been the Binghamton fire chief since 2007. He joined the department in November 1975.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, David said Thomas is one of the longest-serving employees working for the city. He said Thomas has helped to "mold and guide and shape" the fire department.

The mayor said four men are on the active Civil Service list to be considered for the position of fire chief. They are training chief Richard Allen, fire marshal Daniel Eggleston, assistant chief Stephen Faughnan and assistant chief Mark Whalen.

David said he is preparing to schedule interviews with each candidate. He said he hopes to announce his choice before the current chief's retirement date to help ensure a smooth transition.
