Regulars on the popular First Friday Art Walk crave original art by artists of all talents and stature. Friday night, the art of Viggo Holm Madsen will make its debut in the beautiful Phelps Mansion at 191 Court Street in downtown Binghamton  This is one show you should not miss.

I first was introduced to the work of Viggo Holm Madsen after reading a feature article in the Sunday New York Times.  Later, I purchased a number of original pieces that were on display at Binghamton's A Frame Shoppe.  Mr. Madsen's non-traditional use of the print medium was unlike anything I had ever seen before.  Each piece seemed to show a certain complexity with always a great use of color and subject matter.  Very pleasing to the eye.

Friday night's opening reception titled, "Viggo Holm Madsen: A Life of Art: A Retrospective," will debut tonight from 6 to 9pm, with the exhibit running through April 14th at the Phelps Mansion.

According to the artist's website MadsenArts.com. Viggo Holm Madsen was "born in Kaas, Denmark and received his BFA and MFA from Syracuse University.  Mr. Madsen was a prolific artist, renowned for his printmaking and always experimenting using woodcut, embossing, etching, oil, watercolor and batik."

The New York Times called Mr. Madsen "one of Long Island's best-known printmakers." His work has appeared in over 200 solo exhibitions in the United States and Europe. He is listed in the prestigious "Who's Who in American Art", "Who's Who in the East."  And beginning tonight, a rare opportunity to see an amazing lifetime retrospective of art right here in Binghamton and meet family members that call the Southern Tier their home.
