ToC Critic’s Pick: Beyonce (Feat. the Dixie Chicks), ‘Daddy Lessons’ [Listen]
Let's just all get over ourselves and embrace a great musical collaboration. As good as the Dixie Chicks sounded singing Beyonce's "Daddy Lessons" at the 2016 CMA Awards, they sound even better on the studio version.
Country? Not Country? If you get wrapped up in the semantics of the song, you lose. "Daddy Lessons" is on Beyonce's Lemonade album, and the song isn't likely to go far on country radio. It was a collaboration built for five or six very special minutes of television. Sonically, Beyonce's best country doppelgänger is LeAnn Rimes. Only Rimes has that unique ability to mix blues and soul into her brand of country.
Harmonica and horns drive the song through Queen Bey's lessons about life and men. Then the song flips to the Dixie Chicks' "Long Time Gone," which is unexpected and nothing short of brilliant. One wonders if it's a sign of peace between the country trio and the country establishment.
A certain group of fans won't be able to get past a pop superstar taking the CMA Awards stage with a country trio they see as unpatriotic. Honestly, those people haven't read this far into the "Daddy Lessons" song review. The horns, the mixing of genres, the power of the performance — it's all reminiscent of 2015, when Justin Timberlake teamed with Chris Stapleton. Would we be shooting as many arrows toward the performers if it had been two men on stage Wednesday night?
