A horse that no one else wanted, could do something that hasn't been done in over 35 years. American Pharoah will try to win the Triple Crown at the 147th running of the Belmont Stakes.

He was "a plain brown wrapper" with no flashy white markings on his face or his feet. In 2013, no one bid the listed minimum sale price of $300,000 so owner Ahmed Zayat took him back.

12 horses have tried to accomplish the feat of winning the Belmont Stakes. All have failed since since Affirmed and legendary jockey Steve Cauthen in 1978. California Chrome had a chance last year, but he was defeated in heartbreaking fashion.

He's the favorite at 4-5 odds and will go from the 5th post.

Frosted (5-1) and Materiality (13-2) have the best chance of beating American Pharoah in the 1 1/2 mile race.

The race is on NBC5. 4:30 is race coverage with Post Time at 6:50.

While you're waiting for the race don't forget the drink: The Belmont Jewel!

Here's how you make it -

  • 1.5 oz Woodford Reserve (Kentucky Bourbon)
  • 2 oz Lemonade
  • 1 oz Pomegranate juice

Shake vigorously with ice and serve in a rocks glass with ice.  Garnish with Red cherry or lemon twist and enjoy.
