Aid agencies are thanking American Legion Post 80 in Binghamton for opening its doors to assist the tenants displaced by the Mather Street fire May 9.

One of the apartment building residents, Vietnam veteran Joe Giordoni, opened the Legion for staging aid operations.

The tenants were able to use restroom facilities and gather in the main hall where they received blankets and other assistance from the American Red Cross.

Some 35 people lived in the building at 1 Mather Street, which went up in flames shortly before 4 a.m.  There was one injury reported.

The cause of that fire is still under investigation.
