One of the things I enjoy about winter in the Southern Tier is The Almost-Annual New York State Crappie Derby. Unfortunately, it's going to live up to it's name this year. As in, we 'almost' had it this year.

This fun, family event happens at Whitney Point Lake. The organizers have a little something for everyone.  A concession stand on the ice with lots of hot chocolate, coffee and food to warm your body.

They have a meteorologist from NOAA on hand to educate and inform the kids (young and old.) They drill a hole in the ice and put a camera in it, so you can see what it looks like and maybe even see a fish.

It's a competition but most of the people are there for fun and a great experience to share with the kids.  The event scheduled for Saturday, February 13th has been postponed because of the warm weather especially the last couple of days.

Even though it's supposed to get colder at the end of the week, this weekend and into next week. There isn't enough time for ice growth to safely put on the event.

To keep up with any other developments about the derby, go here. Like the Chicago Cubs say every year: "Wait till next year."
