Town officials say the company wants to build a 19,000-square-foot market on Route 17C. The store would be constructed on the site which has been home to a car dealership for several decades.

The new ALDI operation would be located a short distance west of a TOPS Markets grocery store.

Owego officials have been advised the ALDI store could employ 25 to 30 people. Five of the jobs would be full-time.

ALDI has indicated construction of the new store could start in the spring and it could be open by the end of next year.

An ALDI regional representative was not available to discuss the Owego project.

The town zoning board of appeals has scheduled public hearings for 7 p.m Thursday on three ALDI requests. The company is seeking a special use permit to construct a building in a flood area. ALDI also wants variances to build closer to the roadway than allowed under zoning rules and for fewer parking spaces than normally required.

ALDI is said to be prepared to purchase the property where the Scoville-Meno Auto Plaza now is located.

Scoville-Meno vice president Jake Scoville Tuesday afternoon said he was "not in a position to comment" on the future of the Owego site. In an email statement, he wrote "there are many contingencies involved."

ALDI has three stores in Broome County. They are located in Vestal, Westover and in the town of Chenango.
