Addiction is a serious problem in the United States.  Addiction consumes people here in the Southern Tier.  According to AlcoholRehab.com, "over 20 million people are current or former drug addicts in the States."  The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) estimates that "drugs cost the community in excess of $18 billion annually due to the impact on health and productivity."  18 billion?  Are you serious?

While I have never done drugs I have had my share of friends who have and have suffered the consequences by losing their careers, personal relationships and just about everything they once enjoyed in life.  The price one pays for addiction is far beyond anyone realizes and in the case of New Yorkers, billions of dollars.
