I’ve come to realize that scary things and places aren’t for me, so I guess I’m out. But if you live for the thrill of having your pants scared off, then this is right up your alley.

It’s called the single most haunted place in the world and it’s up for sale. Let me introduce you to Poveglia, a small, deserted island in the Venetian lagoon that will be going on the auction block next month.

So what makes Poveglia so terrifying? Well, it all started back in the late 19th century when Poveglia was used as a checkpoint for ships going to Venice. There was a couple of ships that entered Poveglia carrying plague victims in 1793 and the island ended up being sealed off and was quarantined.

A bunch of the plague victims died on the island and there in lies the reason that people are so freaked out by the island- it’s believed that the plague victims haunt it.  But what- there’s more. Poveglia was converted into a hospital for the mentally ill in 1922.

You can guess where this is going, can’t you? As was custom in the time, several gruesome and crude lobotomies were performed at the hospital by a doctor that some believe went mad because of the ghosts. The doctor eventually threw himself off the bell tower and I’m thinking you can deduce how that ended.

Did I mention that there aren't any boats that make regular trips to the island? It's that creepy.

While owning my own private island sounds completely tantalizing, I think I'm gonna pass on this one.
