Having graduated form the State University of New York system, I know the value of higher education and recommend it for anyone willing to want to better themselves in education.  It's something that was ingrained in me by my parents and grandparents.

With the spring semester about to start and the return of students to the main campus and downtown Binghamton area, it surprising the number of people that have lived here all their lives, that know very little about this prestigious and highly acclaimed hometown University.

Here are 5 facts about BU that you may not know:

  • According to the University web site, the Fiske Guide to Colleges (2013) recognizes Binghamton as one of the "premier public universities in the northeast" and ranks it a "best buy." BU consistently sits on top of Best University lists, including US News & World Report.
  • The University consists of seven schools: Harpur College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Community and Public Affairs, the Decker School of Nursing, the Graduate School of Education, the School of Management and the Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science and the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
  • Binghamton's School of Management is ranked 25th in the nation among public institutions by Bloomberg BusinessWeek.
  • The campus is spread across 930 acres and is nicknamed "the brain" due to its' unique layout.  190 acres is made up of protected forest and wetlands, perfect for hiking, biking, running and a six-acre pond.
  • The University consistently receives top recognition in The Princeton Review's annual "green rating" of colleges.
