A pig headed to a slaughterhouse near Sacramento, California broke out of her cage and jumped off the back of a truck recently.  It happened on a highway, but luckily she landed on some grass and wasn't hurt.

Then some animal control officers caught her, and took her to an animal shelter.  And after she showed up, she gave birth to 14 piglets.  Unfortunately only nine made it, but that's somewhat common with pigs. The shelter had to wait to see if the owner claimed them, technically he could have taken the pig and the piglets.  Luckily that never happened.

So they named her Rita, and transferred her and the piglets to a 600-acre animal sanctuary, where they'll stay until they're old enough to be split up.  Then other animal sanctuaries are planning to take them in.
